Russian Lakes

In the rivers and lakes of Russia various species of fish can be found. There are more than 269 fresh water species of fish in Russia. About four hundred species of sea fish can be found in coastal waters of the country.

The Caspian Sea in the South of Russia is the biggest lake in the world. The area of the Caspian Sea is 376 thousand square kilometers, maximal depth 1025 meters. Salinity level is less than in oceans, that is why here can be found both, freshwater and sea fish.

Lake Baikal, the total area of which is 31500 square kilometers, has the largest numbers of endemic species of fish. It is the deepest lake in the world. Great number of fish species is included into the Red Book of Russia, as they are under the threat of disappearance. Atlantic sturgeon is included into the Red Book of International Union of wildlife. The lake usually freezes from January till April. More than thee hundred small rivers run into this lake, but only one-the Angara goes out. Angara is a great destination for any Russia travel trip or Russian river cruise. It is almost as good as Volga river Russia cruise.

Other lakes, such as the Ladoga, the Onega, the Taymyr and others are also considered as big rives of Russia, but surely they are all smaller than the Caspian Sea and the Baikal.

All the lakes in Russia are situated in picturesque places, so you’ll surely admire them all.
